"To the Great West" by Reino Kero is the first part of a 6-part series on the history of Finnish migration. It is the first extensive comprehensive study on the subject. This part examines Finnish migration to North America, mainly before World War II. It helps the reader find out, among other things, how many immigrants left Finland for North America, who they were and why they left, how the journey was organized, what professions they worked in, what the everyday life of immigrants was like, and how many returned to Finland.

The book is based on very extensive research into the history of migration conducted in recent decades. The second part, written by the same author, takes a closer look at the life and culture of American immigrants, including political and religious movements and recreational activities. The other parts of the series expand the perspective to other countries and continents. They are written by several experienced researchers in the field.
