Fair Condition
Language: Swedish
A small number of Finnish-Swedish families moved to the factory town of Bridgeport in the 1920s. Among them, Edward Mattson and Gunnar Backlund, president and secretary of the eastern district respectively, organized a Runeberg Lodge on March 30, 1930. The number of charter members was 16. Oscar O. Anderson was elected chairman at the organizational meeting.
A decade later, a report stated: “Because of so few compatriots here, especially of the younger generation, it has been a struggle to get ahead. In recent years, many of our members have also moved to other states, and only 5 of the original members now remain.” The lodge was dissolved in 1960, and the few remaining members were incorporated into Lodge 205 in New Haven. Oscar O. Anderson was the leading figure in the lodge. He was for a time a member of the Order’s board as well as of the Eastern District.
