Join artist and educator Alison Aune to create colorful, creative, and contemporary happy himmeli! Originally himmeli (ceiling mobiles) were created mainly in Nordic, Baltic, and some Eastern European countries using rye straw. They functioned as good luck charms that were hung from the ceiling in homes, usually over the dining table, to promote fertility of fields and good harvests. In this workshop, participants will learn about the history and contemporary innovations of Finnish and Swedish Himmeli forms before creating their own himmeli using a variety of materials such as paper straws, pompoms, paper flowers, ribbons, beads and more.
No experience is necessary for this class. Open to students ages 13 and up. All students under 18 must be accompanied by an adult guardian who is also registered in the class.
