In The Way is a novel of love and loss. Helmi, daughter of Finnish immigrants, struggled unceasingly to survive in the face of persecution, poverty and prejudice. Was the abuse that ensued an inevitable result of hard times? Emotional illness? Both? Family history furnished the original material for this novel of early 20th Century Finnish-American life. The characters, however, are fictional melds of people from stories passed on through generations. Helmi's plight raises to acute consciousness the devastating effects of abuse on sensitive children. Have today's parents learned to treat children with greater care and respect? How might we learn from our past so that painful history isn't repeated?
